Being a senior in college is a bittersweet feeling. One moment you think, “Thank goodness I’m almost done!” **insert fist pump in the air** Then the next moment you find your eyes watering and your heart sinking as you realize these past three years really have been the best time of your life, and Sigma Alpha has been right in the middle of all of it.
This past week, through our fall retreat and recruitment week, we asked ourselves; “Why Sigma Alpha? Why a sorority? Why this sorority?” If we can’t answer that question for ourselves, how can we evaluate recruits on why they want to?
In my quest for the answer, I think back to three years ago. I was a freshman who just moved 5 hours from home, left the people she loved to start a new chapter of her life as a Kansas State Wildcat. Coming from a small school in Southwest Kansas, I didn’t have many people around me from back home. I was looking for a family, and figured there was no better place to look than within the agricultural industry I grew up in.
It seems so crazy now to think of how scared I was going into that interview room, but when I got my bid later on that night there was just something about it that made me feel a little bit more whole. Those actives did so much more than grant me a bid, they took me in and gave me a home.
So when I ask myself, “Why Sigma Alpha?” the snappy response in my head is, “Why not?”
They say you are whom you hang out with. So why not hang out with women in the agricultural industry who have the same passion I do to build a better tomorrow?
I rushed Sigma Alpha to build connections within the agricultural industry. Through being a part of something greater than me, I strengthened my ties to the industry I grew up in, and gained sisters that I will share a bond with for the rest of my life.
No matter where life takes us, we will always be sisters in agriculture.
