Because our sorority is made up of women with a passion for Agriculture, advocacy for our community is something that is near and dear to our hearts. One of the easiest ways to do that is through social media.
As an Agricultural Communications and Journalism major, I am learning about all of the different social media outlets and how we, as a group of advocates, can use them to tell the general public about what we do and why we do it. One outlet that I didn’t realize Agriculture was utilizing (and utilizing very effectively) was Pinterest.
It is very difficult to build a presence on Pinterest, so the fact that when you search ‘Agriculture’ you get all kinds of information graphics, pictures, quotes and fun facts is very impressive.
That is something that we could all begin to use to get our point across about the industry. We can use it to talk about GMOS and animal welfare. Some people are using it to talk about crop production and pesticides. Pinterest is a tool that we could all use to explain and spread the word about the industry in a way that others are receptive to. Advocating in a way that people are willing to read or listen to is critical in getting our message across; so finding new and creative ways to do that will only benefit the world of agriculture.
