Education in the Present and Future

One of the most beneficial things that I did for my education was decide to take advanced classes in high school. High school is supposed to be the best time of your life because it is the last break before college and the real world. For me, this was not the case. In high school I was a part of the International Baccalaureate program that is designed to prepare students for college and the real world. This program along with the AP program in high schools have many benefits for students that graduate from these programs. IB classes were extremely challenging and pushed me in many ways that I never believed that I would be pushed, however in the end it was very rewarding. Through IB I learned time management, the rewards of hard work, how to prepare myself for college, and many social and life skills that I may not have learned otherwise. The program emphasized knowledge, service, and leadership. These are skills that I will take with me throughout my college career and my life. These types of programs are now being threatened in schools in Kansas due to budget cuts in the education department. I believe that Kansans should stand strong and keep these programs in Kansas schools because of the value that so many student have gotten from them. For many kids, these programs give them the opportunity to turn their lives around, get into a better college, and have a more optimistic future. My parents have always pushed me to do my best and be the best that I can be, IB gave me the tools that it will take to accomplish my goals. The coursework that I did in high school has prepared me for my classes in college and additionally has helped me earn my early admittance into veterinary school, this has been my dream since I was young. It is important to push students to succeed and encourage them in their endeavors. Programs like AP and IB help students succeed through challenging academics and teaching skills that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Knowledge is an important and powerful tool in today’s society and it should not be compromised for a budget.
